Unlikely Best Friends: The Music of Brahms and Dvořák
Much attention is given to the relationship of Joseph Haydn and W.A. Mozart; the deep mutual respect they shared is indicative of a meaningful relationship, particularly to Mozart, who saw “Papa Haydn” as a father figure. It is then surprising that little attention is paid to the strong bond Brahms and Dvořák shared, one that will be explored through their music in this program. By hearing early, middle, and late works by both composers, the ways their compositions shaped their lives and friendship (and vice versa) will be made clear with some of the finest Romantic chamber music composed.
